: Ken, the permit situation is very easy to accomplish. Contact Florida Fish & Game and they will send you an application, you fill it out and pay the money ($10-$25 a year) then you will receive your permit. You asked how necessary it is, we would recommend following all laws (State & Federal) We have never had Fish & Game come out to our place, however, I have heard about them visiting others in the community. As long as your not keeping venomous species or anything protected, you will not need to prove your husbandry skills at all. The city zoning laws might differ from city to city, but we are not aware of any laws forbidding keeping reptiles at this time. Good luck on your move.
