Lots of physiological, anatomical, and behavioral research has been conducted on pythons and boas (not to mention pitvipers). Look up names like Terashima, Goris, de Cock Buning, Grace, Chiszar, Molenaar for some good studies and information on how it all works. Its a pretty complicated system but current science suggests that the infrared pathway is connected to the visual pathway and that pythons, boas, and pitvipers use infrared radiation to map out a spatial image that is the infrared equivalent of normal vision.

Some boas (B. constrictor, E. murinus) don't have pits, but have been tested and are just as IR sensitive as pythons and boas with pits.
