I'm confused about the pictures. I was in a hurry and probably could have figured things out if I had clicked on more thumbnails but...

In the pictures with the raised egg crate it looks like it is higher than the substrate in any of the following pictures.

Does the egg crate slope from front to back or something?

Secondly, I'd be very interested in hearing a verbal description of the setup and the biological principals behind the different steps. Basically describing the layers up to the point point that live plants were added.

Like how high the crate is elevated, what goes underneath and on top of the crate, how the filtration works etc.
