Thanks for the details. Reading your post and looking at pictures of precision caging I think I understand them pretty well. I see many advantages to making the doors this way. First being that the strip of oak on top and bottom seems to almost frame the door, by making it look to be recessed. Second being the top strip of oak is perfect for hiding lighting behind. Thirdly, the bottom strip keeps the substrate in.
Of course you could do similar with sliding glass, so I'm still weighing my options.
I'll try to post pics when I finish the cage.
Right now my experience is strictly limited to building racks, of which we've built four.
