Be wary of sealant for tile and grout. Some of that stuff gives off fumes for a long time, and in a closed cage this is not good. There may be types that are safe - read the label and allow for plenty of dry time. I really like the idea you got for the water-oil sealing. This is not only safe but you can reapply as needed without worrying about fumes.
