I think it is a good question!! The cage sides and back are made from thinner melamine to reduce the weight of the cage, and it really does make a big difference. I put the sides on the outside of the top and botoom so I don't have to screw vertically into them causing the melamine to crack. This way the screws go into the thicker melamine. Take a look at the pic & you will see what I mean about the sides being thinner.

:I love the cages! Now for the stupid question. Is there an advantage to putting the vertical pieces on the outside and the horizontal pices on the inside, or is it ok to reverse them?
