With birch ply or solid stock as well as with pine you'll often get uneven results if you just put the stain on and wipe it off. There is a trick however. They make a prestain product for this purpose but it's even easier to dilute your finish either poly or vara thane and I mean dilute it strong. I really prefer the poly urethane for this and I dilute it 10 parts thinner to 1 part urethane. Apply this first and then lighltly sand before staining. This will fill the softer grains so that the stain doesn't penetrate as deeply and you'll have a much more uniform finsih without the resultant cries of despair. LOL
