I think the 'official' time is 10 hours constant until it would go empty, and the capacity is 1.2 gallons. I have my tree boa's on before for 6 minutes every 2 hours (72 minutes a day), and it would last longer than a week before it got empty, which seems to back up the manufacturer's claims. I covered more of the top and cut the time in half and still get the humidity in the 70-80% range, so I add water less often.
RO water is a good idea. Luckily for me, we had a reverse osmosis filter already installed in the kitchen, so I've been using that.
