Carole -- and I have been toying with the idea of placing one of those large chameleon cages (the soft cloth zip up kind) on its side in partial sun with one end in the shade so allow them some exercise. That's because I am a breeder and all of my snakes are housed in trays.
Better yet I have a design for a ten foot long "run" made from small gauge plastic netting that has a shaded end. That way I can "exercise" my female Colubrids BEFORE they lay eggs. My thinking is that we have egg bound females due to a lack of exercise. An outdoor exercise pen of this size would help alleviate this problem. Problems: the pen better be escape proof; I would still supervise the exercise sessions while getting some sun myself. Of course, a smaller run would also suffice, but I have an acre of sand and some old chicken coops along which I can build the exercise pen. Just a thought right now, but that's what keeps me young--thinking about neat ideas once a year!
I used to sun my rosy boas and ball pythons while I cleaned their trays once a week. Here in El Paso that is possible quite early and quite late in the year. They rarely strayed from the concrete apron just in front of my garage (where I used to house my snakes). Now I have Colubrids exclusively and all are housed in a spare bedroom; I do not recommnd placing any Colubrid outside for even a second--some will out race you while others will be out of sight before you can turn your head back from the chores!
