You're most likely going to have Pituophis catenifer catenifer, the Pacific gopher snake (same as we have up here in Sacramento). If you want captive bred speciemns I know Great Valley Serpentarium in Lodi had neonates for 40 bucks a couple of weeks ago. As the season starts to warm up here we should be able to see them in the field very soon (haven't spied any myself just yet though). I prefer starting out with smaller snakes first and raising them on...I've found them to better adapt to captivity. I'm sure other folks have had good success with bigger speciemns though. Are they pretty easy to get to eat...well, there aren't many other snake species more voracious than Pituophis IMO!!!

:I live in central california and was wondering what is the most common gopher snake in the area?Also any advice on getting one as a pet?How hard is it to tame them?Should I start with a 1 footeer or 3 footer?Also are they pretty easy to get to eat? Thanks,Ryan
