Spotted pythons are great small snakes, though I'm very biased there. You can't go wrong with a cornsnake. Florida kingsnakes and eastern (or chain) kingsnakes make excellent captives. Get info on these species, and more, and decide what you like best. There are many snakes that make good first choices.
