I too would say no on getting a boa just now. I'm 23 and have one boa, somewhere around 6 foot, that is a handful at times!
If you want a bigger snake, that SHOULDN'T be able to eat small dogs, look into carpet pythons. I have one of these, and while nice long snakes, they're very slender, not as heavy bodied as boas. Babies are a bit nippy, though nice and calm as adults.
