From what I've heard, they should eat crickets for a couple of months. Then you have to get them to eat the pellets - not all will, at least at first.

Do you have a size limit? Bearded dragons need at least a 40 gallon breeder sized tank (36x18x12), and they grow very fast, so it's best to get the permanent tank right away.

Another animal you could look into is a leopard gecko - although they're not vegetarian, you can feed them a diet of mealworms, which don't smell and can be kept in the refridgerator for weeks at a time. A 10 gallon tank should be ok for one gecko.
