My guess would be that there is just a place for him to get out. he probably walked over and started exploring and then just kept going. Try to find out where he is getting out from. Maybe watch him for a while and see where he goes out (although it seemed with mine that they would never escape when you were in the room). Once you do know where he is getting out, fix it. You don't want him getting out and getting lost.
