If you don't plan on breeding your dragon and are not particularly looking for color I would go with a normal or german giant phase as they are the most hardy due to excellent genetic diversity. If you want something more colorful I would advise trying to find out if their is a reptile show in your area as you could then pick from many different breeders at exccellent prices.
As far as cages go if you don't plan on stacking cages a top opening cage is probably better. Substrate can get caught in the railing of side opening cages. Also, a screen top allows you to rest the lighting on top of the cage. Make sure you get a 60 gallon + tank so it will last you through adulthood.
