How do you know when to throw out sphangnum moss??

Hi,
I was just curious how often should you replace the spahgnum moss, if you should at all. I have a deli cup full with moss which I put over the heatmat for my ball and this provides enough humidity for the cage, Im just curious as to when it should be replaced?
