While I generally don't condone swiping other people's property, I think that the lives involved can be a good argument for doing so. That said, I've had to do the same thing - from another "rescue" person.
Find a reptile rescue person near you, and when the reptiles have "escaped", make sure they somehow find their way to the rescue. As for you then breaking the rules - if the college person said it's too late in the year to do anything to her, then it's too late for them to do anything to you...
