Though there are many venomoids in the USA, it's a questionable practise. There are some main discussion going on on the venomous reptiles forum now and then and you could find some good hints on the subject there.
Keep in mind that venom is not only part of some snakes' nature, but it's a good help for their distestion process. I've seen some venomoids in good health, though.
In some cases the animal dies for post-traumatic stress or infection and the whole is not 100% free of risks. Tissues may recover if not asported properly.
I still think that every venomous snake should stay like it is in nature (and the same I think about every single animal living in my house, cats, ferret and snakes...) but the choice is up to you...
