TIMES OF INDIA (New Delhi) 11 January 01 Rare turtle species found in Coochbehar
Coochbehar (PTI): A rare species of Turtle has been found in a lake at Balabhat village in West Bengal's Coochbehar district. Divisional Forest Officer Ujjwal Ghosh said on Wednesday the Kachuga Sylhetensis Turtle was one of the rarest species, and was found in the state for the first time.
The tiny creature was netted by fishermen in Auxibill lake recently, Ghosh said. A thorough search netted three more turtles of the same species from the lake, he added.
The four Olive Brown Turtles were now being kept in an aquarium at the newly built Raj Palace Garden under Coochbehar eco-heritage preservation society.
Ghosh said the species was an endangered one with 90 per cent decline in its population during the last decade.
