JAPAN UPDATE (Tokyo) 09 November 00 Iguana Found by Gushikawa Man
A green iguana has been found in a garden in Gushikawa. Moriyasu Nakayama caught the iguana with the aid of a mop, holding it down by its neck.
It was then taken to Gushikawa Police station, where it was temporarily kept as a lost item. Afterwards it was transferred to the Okinawa Children's Zoo in Okinawa city.
The iguana is 60 cm long and is estimated to be 2 years old. It is not clear whether the lizard had escaped or been abandoned.
Manabu Otani, the head of the Okinawa Reptile Research Office says "many reptile owners don't know how to take care of them. Some are kept in small cages without the right care. I feel sorry for iguanas in captivity and the ones that haven't been looked after properly tend to be aggressive."
