Banded Sea Snake sighting - Hawaii

My family and I just returned from a trip to Maui, Hawaii. I love snorkeling and have done quite a bit of it in the Pacific and Carribbean over the years. Late one afternoon, while snorkeling at a place called Black Rock off Maui my son and I spotted what looked exactly like a banded sea snake in about 10 to 12 feet of water snaking in and out of coral. We viewed him for about 10 to 15 seconds before he disappeared under some coral and we were distracted by a sea turtle. The creature we saw was thin, flat tail, even, broad black to gray-white bands and maybe two to three feet long. "Experienced" divers we talked to on Maui told us we saw an eel, probably a zebra moray. But, we saw several species of eel off Maui, including the zebra, and this was not a zebra moray. Is there another type of eel this could have been? If not, is a banded sea snake rare in Hawaiian waters? Thanks, Mike Mgebroff
