AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 10 April 00 Crocodiles search inner-Cairns for food
Cairns residents are being warned to take extreme care around the city's creeks and waterways.
A crocodile almost two-metres-long was caught in a drainage system in the inner-Cairns suburb of Paramatta Park last night.
Senior Wildlife ranger Brian Wright says continuing heavy rain and high tides are pushing crocodiles into the city in search of food and new habitat.
"If they do see a crocodile, under no circumstances should they attempt to capture or handle a crocodile," he said.
"General common sense is the answer, you shouldn't leave any fish scraps laying around or any food sources at all, you should not wade into water, just general commonsense that when you live up north you have to take into account."
