AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 13 December 99 Boy in hospital after python attack
Queensland: A seven-year-old boy has been released from the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane, after being attacked by a three-metre python on Moreton Island.
Neil O'Hare and his son were sleeping in a tent near the Tangalooma resort, when Mr O'Hare this morning woke to discover the non-venomous snake around the boy's neck.
He managed to remove the python from the child but not before his son was bitten several times on the face and neck.
The boy was taken to hospital by the Queensland Rescue Helicopter and pilot, Scott Peterson, says it was a terrible ordeal for the pair.
"The son woke up - they were camping - with a snake, a three-metre - either a python or a carpet - snake wrapped around the poor boy's neck," he said.
"[The snake] was starting to try to swallow him.
"The father attempted to pull the snake off and did so eventually and threw it outside but before that, the snake had about seven or eight goes at the poor boy."
Mr Peterson says the child was calm throughout the ordeal.
"The boy, when he got to us, he was really good, a brave young fellow," he said.
"He was quite calm, I think he was in a little bit of shock over what happened but he was a perfect patient throughout the whole trip."
