There's a great link I just found. www.herpindex.com, go to Japan, and then to the Hime Habu, that's what it was. I mentioned that I found it in habitat that I would expect to find a cottonmouth in, oddly (as Darwin would say) it looks a lot like a cottonmouth as well.
