Take a syringe & insert it between the scales into the lump, draw the plunger back if fluid appears in the syringe stop, if not insert into a different location of the lump. If fliud still does not appear than you are dealing with a solid mass that may be cancerious but if you obtain fluid then you are probably dealing with an absest (infection), most lumps i have had in snakes or other animals have been absest's.
