Aspen hands down, it spot cleans well and in bulk, it's fairly inexpensive. Newspaper is hard to beat in general, but I noticed that everything had my grubby fingerprints on it after a year or so.
You didn't ask, but here's my dislikes re aspen:
1. Hatchlings dessicate and need to be kept damp for a shed or two-paper towels get the nod here.
2. I worry that some snakes are vigorous feeders and gobble a healthy lump of aspen with that mouse. A sheet of cardboard to feed on will eliminate the aspen munching. How much fiber does a snake need after all?
3. Is it just me or does the stuff travel all over your house too?
That's it! Jeff
