I use Sani-chips (http://www.teklad.com/bedding/sani.htm)...a hardwood chip sold by Harlan Teklad. It's more absorbant than other particulate type substrates and is, unlike any option other than newspaper, dust-free. It's very loose, and seems to do a great job of drying out fecal material. It's very easy to spot clean...either by hand or with a small shop-vac.
