Southern Alli's In SD

I recently moved to San Diego and I caught a large Southern alli right off the bat. I kept him for a little while and took some pic's. I returned him to the same location I caught him and haven't seen one since. I didn't keep him because I thought they were fairly common seeing as how I found that one so quickly. But I have been herping around here for about 3 months now and haven't seen a single one. I've been looking in woodland settings some and close to water (when i can actually find some water that is in a legal location), any suggestions on where I can locate some more? He was a beautiful lizard and the pic's came out really good. I don't want to keep one as a pet I'm only looking for some others to ad to my photo collection.
