Hope this is not too late,

If your friend arrives at the airport in Johannesburg or Cape Town he can go to the nearest bookshop and they will definitely have a very good field guide on reptiles of Southern Africa. They also have maps and photographs of the various reptiles.

If do not have the exact name for the field guide @ the moment. If you want i will find it for you plus the ISBN.
