THIS DAY (Lagoes, Nigeria) 11 December 00 Anti-snake Venom Factory For Gombe (Abubakar Abdullahi)
Gombe: A multi-million naira factory for the production of anti-snake venom known as "Echitab" may be established in Gombe State by the Federal Government next year.
Presenting his 2001 budget to the state House of Assembly recently, Governor Abubakar Hashidu said the state government has already contacted the Federal Government on the issue.
The government, according to him, has responded favourably on the issue.
"We envisaged that the "Echitab" anti-snake venom production company would be established in the 2001 fiscal year," he said.
Alhaji Hashidu explained that already the new anti-snake venom has been tested clinically and found very effective and suitable on different species of snakes in the tropic.
He also said in addition to saving cost on importation, the drug has a ready- made market in Africa.
The governor emphasised that the establishment of the factory was necessary because the social and economic consequences of the snake menace are enormous in the state as the productive and able-bodied persons are mostly affected during farming season.
The species of snakes (carpet viper) found in the area are believed to be the most deadly in tropical Africa because of their high degree of poison.
Already, the General Hospital kaltungo has been selected by the Federal Ministry of Health to be developed to a referral centre for the treatment of snake-bite cases.
