Marshall Univerity in WV has a great herp professor that does graduate student research. It would be a great place to go for grad school if you want to study native herps. I went to MU for undergrad and grad in biology but didnt do herps for a thesis (although I did some independent studies and museum work). Unfortunetly, they seem to be phasing out the zoology courses (they had alot of great zoology courses when I was there) and focusing on forensic sciences. So I wouldnt suggest it for an undergrad. But Dr. Pauley does alot of herp work for the state and has an active research program going, so if you want to go to grad school and study herps, look into it.
