I know that Dr Alan Savitzky at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virgnia is doing exactly what pj described but with Canebrakes. He has over 7,000 individual sites all recorded on ArcView! I know if you did something like that, you would have a LOT of data to compare to. Although I don't know if he has actually published anything on it yet. Good luck.
