Salmonella

I hope I spelled that right. In light of the recent humane society press release I was wondering....

Can Salmonella be tested for/treated in snakes so there is definately no threat to children? My child currently does not come in direct contact with any animals, and we are careful to wash up after handling them ourselves - but when he is ten I would like him to have his own animal if he wants one.
