When I was about 5, I remember finding a garter snake with my girlfriend. We were FREAKED out and ran to tell my mom, who told us it was probably a garter snake and was harmless. I was going through a bold stage so I ran back to catch it, I was enthralled. Since then I was unafraid of reptiles or amphibians and caught many of them all throughout my childhood, thanks to my mom telling me snakes are good (she is scared of snakes, which is even more amazing that she would tell me something good about them) Now I'm going to study herp medicine in college and I am totally unafraid of snakes or herps of any kind, the only thing I am afraid of is large craneflies which traumatized me as a kid by flying in my sleeping bag at my grandmas. EEK! (for those of you who have never seen a cranefly, picture a giant flying daddy long legs...WEIRD)
