I recently returned from a two year project in the DR. The geckos you speak of are from an offshore island, and not easy to obtain. As far as I know the DR will does not issue export permits for live animals. There population of this gecko appears to be secure and quite large and I personally feel there are many other spp. that require more attention. Nobody talks of teh DR giant geckos for example...
