Actually my best guess on seeing this was the same as many of you - a weird color morph of Eastern Painted. I think that the alligning of the scutes pretty much rules out a hybrid type situation as I would assume that to be recessive (BUT - ya never know) If it is a hybrid it's a naturally occuring one. This was not found in anyone's backyard pond.
It's a really nice looking animal - love the yellow tail.
