A baby black rat doesnt really have much of a checkerboard belly pattern, not in the sense of a corn anyways. It is more of a splotchy pattern with the belly turning more of a solid color from about midway to the tail tip. In adults it is even more pronounced, with some of the very black adults having black bellies from the midpoint down.

Here are some pics. These are from the Snakesandfrogs.com website and they have a very large data base of pictures. Some very nice photography and one of the sites I enjoy.
