Greg, sorry, but I am positive it was red and black. I almost had a run in with a coral pulling weeds a few months ago and so I spent time studing the color patterns so I could identify it more clearly. The tail pattern was definitely black and red, however, I know there is always the possibility I was too surprised to be completely accurate. Is there ANY native (or non)snake that would have a black tail with red bands? Thanks for the help guys, Becky.
::The "Old Herper" is right on the money. The coral's tail (& forward part as well) lack the red bands, & the scarlet king's tail has the full complement of bands. Is it possible that the two colors you saw were black & yellow, not black & red?
