: "I agree with you on the wild caught issue, but this person obviously has very little knowledge of this subject."
: Which is exactly the reason I responded as I did. SHE needs to invest some of HER time to do HER own research and gain the knowledge SHE needs. Here is a person ready to capitalize on wild snakes for revenue, who is soliciting buyers, and she hasn't even found out if what she is doing is legal! Can you see the potential for a multitude of problems? For the buyers, sellers, and the SNAKES.
: "I imagine that Gigi just went to a search engine, typed in "venomous snakes" and landed on this forum, which appeared to be a great place to begin and to get questions answered. There's nothing wrong with that."
: No, there is nothing wrong with answering questions when it pertains to snakes and their welfare. Gigi's evident lack of knowledge in EVERY aspect of a venture She is ready to undertake elicited the proper response to her questions. Here is a person ready to catch snakes in quantity and peddle them. Whole or parts. Yet, she doesn't even know if she can. Or, if she milks them, if there are any regulations or protocols SHE needs to follow. Do you think she knows how to milk snakes if she doesn't know a lick about anything else? You think we should answer her questions and wish her well? Can't you just feel those fangs breaking as she forces the fangs of a copperhead through a burlap bag into an empty whisky jug in an attempt to collect the venom in a "sterile" container? Okay, maybe a little too harsh and stereotypical, but not too far from accurate if looking at the intent.
: "My point is why talk down to someone and insult them when you could have spent the same amount of time typing and provided them with useful info and at the same time provided your opinion as well as to why you disagreed with what they proposed."
: Oh, but I did provide useful info and my opinion. It's there, and it's spelled out. And I did it without insulting the person. You think it is insulting because MY answer to HER sent the message of, "sometimes YOU need to DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK?" Because I capitalized "YOU?" This is an issue of responsibility. Gigi needs to take more responsibility for her actions than, "I got snakes for sale!"
: "Why take offense when none was intended and why make someone look elsewhere for information that can easily be provided here?"
: Oh no, the poor person actually has to LOOK for information? Sorry, but there are some things the forum shouldn't provide. Offense taken? Yes, but probably not for the reasons you're thinking. Offended because this person is willing to deal in live venomous snakes or snake products but is too lazy to have asked the questions she should have asked long before coming to the forum offering snakes for sale. Gigi’s approach and effort invested, or lack there of, is offensive!
: "By the way, what about all the classified ads offering wild caught native species? Are you against this? Just curious."
: Can't say I'm a big fan the "reptile enthusiast" who collects reptiles with the specific intention of selling them. Also, not a big fan of the “hobbyist” who collects to offset trip expenses. I’m also not a big fan rattlesnake round ups or people who import/export large quantities of reptiles. Basically, I have a hard time supporting acts which jeopardize the health and welfare of snakes, their environment, and reduces them to a commodity to be exploited.
: “The only problem I see is that too many times, questions asked on this site are answered with unprovoked, needlessly aggressive responses.”
: So, my response was “needlessly aggressive?” Was it also unprevoked? I would think the material in Gigi’s initial post provided material enough to warrant a needlessly aggressive response. Mine, however, was not. Mine was a post which pointed out some of the things one who is intent on selling wild caught snakes needs to look into and onto whose shoulders that responsibility falls. I think you may want to read the post again. The message may come across somewhat differently now. But, maybe not.
: “It just seems like some people with lots of knowledge that frequent this forum, have big chips on their shoulders for whatever reason.”
: Maybe some of us do carry chips on our shoulders. When it comes to exploitation of snakes I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. Do you?
: “You have mentioned in the past that you are concerned for the integrity of this hobby and this forum.”
: I know you were addressing this to Jaffo, who did an excellent job of presenting views analogous to mine, but wouldn’t it seem to you that a person like Gigi who plans on selling wild caught snakes without even doing basic research aids in undermining the integrity of the hobby? You won’t get me to change my mind on this, but I feel like I added to the integrity of the forum by responding how I did. People need to take responsibility for themselves when dealing with venomous snakes. This person clearly isn’t ready for that level of responsibility.
: “It's just my opinion that treating less knowledgable guests to this forum like they are complete idiots and not answering their questions honestly
: and humbly undermines that integrity.”
: Do you feel as if I treated Gigi like an idiot? If telling someone to do the work they should have already done already is treating them like an idiot, well, than so be it. I answered that post as honestly as I could. I gave the information I felt most appropriate. If we are worried about integrity in the hobby of venomous snake keeping we need to set high standards, not drop the bar low enough for anyone to crawl under.
