Those against field collecting do their part by supporting those who are captive breeding the snake they are interested in maintaining.
As far as cottonmouths, I would consider them very common in some areas and see nothing wrong with taking one. There is also the venomous factor where I have encountered wildlife officers while totally illegaly collecting in a national park who could care less if I was taking them but would make me turn loose any non-ven.( this was in the "good old days")
We have many localized areas of "extinction" where once common types, or those common in some areas (and not protected) no longer exist at all. Some feel you should get them before they are totally bulldozed into oblivion while some say leave them alone and cross your fingers or something.
You will never eliminate all field collections and most don't consider that reality. It just helps every time one of us- who are the destination of the field collected specimens- just say "no" or whatever and go ahead and buy one from someone you trust in the business.
I consider field collecting a kid thing, something I did when I was just starting out and something I've kind of out grown.
