I've kept bugs to...spiders, scorps and a few centipedes.
Snakes ain't the same world though man. I don't work with hots yet for that reason. Frankly, I think it'd be safer to keep a deathstalker for a first scorp than a hot for a first snake. Snakes are faster, more tenacious and damn good at escaping.
Keep some non hots first--I'd reccomend something like a nice, nasty Nerodia or an Amazon Tree Boa. Maybe, since these are not arboreal...hmm...nasty terrerstrials lemme think...spotted pythons (if mine is any indicator) or a nice, imported and ill-tempered blood python.
