matt you are setting yourself up for a fall. the question is not if you will get bit, it is WHEN you will get bit. everyone gets careless, it could be an accident, it might miss a mouse and hit you instead. it might get spooked, fly outta the cage, and when you grab it, it might swing around and bite you. fact is, copperheads are quick sometimes, and i wouldnt think about starting with one. You have obviously never handled them before, and i can tell you handling venomous is much harder than non venomous. If i were you, if you really want a venomous snake, find someone to teach you out in the field. Let them show you how to properly restrain, move, and take care of one. In the meantime, get a mean non venomous snake. Tree boas, coachwhips, racers, and especially water snakes are nippy. they will allow you to tune your handling skills with snakes that could kill you. try to handle them without getting bit, and if you get bit, think about how that could be a fatal mistake for you if it had been a copperhead. It is a large risk. BTW how old are you? you seem young, just as young as me or maybe younger. I keep hots, yet i have been handling them since i was 8 or so(im 15 and 9 months now), when i caught my first hot, a cottonmouth. Prior to that i had caught water snakes(large ones that have a painful bite or it seemed so at the time) and it helped alot. get some experience under your belt. What you are doing is starting with something you can not have a successful time with. You do not know how to handle them, other probably than watching o shea or corwin or irwin. Its a helleva lot different being in their shoes. It looks easy, but its not always that easy to restrain a large thrashing, potentially deadly animal. So if you want something, go with a bad tempered colurbrid. ITs like starting to ride a bike without learning first. you will just fall, except when you fall off a bike for the first time you dont normally lose a limb or your life or the life of a beautiful animal like a copperhead. If you did get bit, it would be just more fuel for the HSUS and media that herps are evil deadly creatures. So do yourself, your snake, and the whole herping community a favor and start with something less threatening. Good luck~Andy
