Hi Gaylon,
I can certainly see why you would want lighter equipment for your work, and I expect I would join you in that preference if I did the same.
My own preferences stem from the fact that (i) I don't do hours of presentation, (ii) I usually fly to fieldwork sites, and having to have a separate box/bag for non-collapsible tongs and hooks is a pain in the nether regions, as well as attracting unnecessary attention from customs etc and incurring the risk of the extra small box being left behind in a taxi (done that...), and (iii) a lot of my fieldwork is car-based, or at least near roads - you don't have to abseil down canyon walls to find Bothrops atrox.
Due to this, my own preferences tend towards heavier equipment (better for turning over stones and logs), collapsible equipment, and, as a personal preference, I prefer hooks with a broader, slightly flattened end that is not too smooth, for easier pinning - exactly the opposite of all commercially available hooks. Like I said, it's the tool that fits the way I work.
All the best,
Wolfgang
