: : : Is the Fierce snake a Taipan, or is it a separate species? I was reading a snake book in which the author wrote the Taipan wsa the 2nd or 3rd deadliest snake in Australia, behind teh Fierce snake, clearly distinquishing the two as separate species.
: : : Also I have noticed that that Taipan and Black Mamba seem very similiar. Both are long, fast snakes with very potent venom. Can anybody please compare and contrast the two? Eg. Hunting strategies, prey, venom etc...

: : I have both Coastal and inland Taipans. They are very different snakes but for taxonomy they are very similar and are correctly placed together in Oxyuranus.
: : Inlands are far more toxic than Coastals but coastal's have longer fangs more venom, and a hell of alot more nervous..by the same token dead is dead.
: : As for similarities between Coastal Taipans Oxyuranus scutellatus and Black Mambas Dendroaspis polylepis. They are probably a case of convergent evolution.
