Having worked with both, I can tell you that the Inland taipan (fierce snake, western taipan, O. microlepidotus) is definitely a different snake than the eastern Taipan (coastal taipan). Although the fierce has a more toxic venom, the coastal taipan is much more dangerous. Fierce snakes can be tailed quite easily and are almost like handling a kingsnake (although babies and of course some adults can be quick and aggressive). Coastal taipans are intelligent, fast-moving snakes which are very calculating. They will wait for a chance to strike rather than strike at anything. Some can become quite handleable, but they have an upper body strength which can make tailing them quite dangerous (in the field, many herpers in Oz will think very carefully before grabbing). Either way, both are excellent, rewarding snakes to work with.
