: Over the years, I have decreased the number of animals in my collection to facilitate larger enclosures, thereby allowing for a more natural circadian rhythm for those I am working with. The results have been fantastic, especially with regard to agonistic behaviour.
Yes! I know my recommendations on housing size have always been looked down upon by reptile keepers and breeders - after all, you can keep far more herps in a rack system outfitted with shoe- or sweater boxes, right?
Ethology has always been an interest of mine, one I got to live for a while doing observation (of mammals, as there were no reptile projects open) at the L.A. Zoo. When I moved, they were just getting into behavioral enrichment projects with some of the hoof stock and primates. It's very nice to know that it is finally expanding to reptiles.
Gaylon, I'd be very interested in your list, too. I have a 'wish list' of herp-related behavior books a-growing to supplement the articles and books I already have.
That reminds me - I need to get to Sonoma State and raid the periodicals stacks soon!
