Can I add a center brace to a tank?

I have searched the internet but I can't find anyone who offers a center brace after the fact. I have read numerous bits of advice on not to mess with the center brace but none how to add a center brace. My present tank doesn't have one. I want to be able to use a hood for half of the length of the tank. Has anyone ever done this? I figure the hood can have the UV bulbs for artificial sun and the open area can have my basking light with an adjustable lamp. Any advice?
