There are different opinions on when the concave plastron of a male begins to become apparent. Although I don't know for sure, the one my experience seems to agree with is that it becomes apparent after the tortoise begins at least simulated mating and that it is at least partially a result of trying to fit over the back of another tortoise. I have been wrong (and have seen "experts" wrong) on just about every method of prediction. The earliest and most sure way I know of is that a juvenile male will sometimes show you when he is taking a soak in warm water. Of course if it's a female you'll be looking forever. Aside from this, if you feed them a diet that allows a normal growth rate it could be as long as 4 years before the tail difference is a reliable method. Tortoises can live up to around 100 years and sexual maturtity in a lot of species isn't until about 7 years.
