This may sound silly, but pay attention to
how the vet deals with the animal.
I once took a gecko to a vet who advertised
that she works with exotics. When
I took the gecko out she looked at
it and said "Is that a lizard?"
Be sure to have a fresh stool sample
ready for the vet. My understanding
is that the sample should be less
than 24 hours old and still moist.
No dried out samples. And it has
to contain some true fecal material.
If it only has the white, chalky
material (urates) this is not
enough to test for worms and
other parasites and microbes.
Put a fresh sample in a zip-loc
type of plastic bag.
Also take note if your tort has
a runny nose or wheezes.
Look at the Tortoise Trust web
pages [ www.tortoisetrust.org ]
for some good info on the health
problems they sometimes have.
BTW, I have a russian tort, too.
He had some pinworms but a couple
rounds of Panacur cleared that
up and now he is healthy and active.
I also rescued another russian from
Petsmart, but unfortunately he
died after 4 weeks in spite of
trip to the vet.
