: Hi Terry,
: No this is not my first tortise but the first time I have had one with this problem.
: I do feed a variety of greens. Do you know what caused his shell to become soft? When I got home last night he had eaten
: a little of the squash. Is there some kind of injection a vet could give him? The neareast vet I could find is 80 miles away
: and not open on Saturdays. I have been ill and can not take any more time off of work. If I knew for sure the vet could do something for him
: I would find some way to get him there.
: Thanks again
Betty,
I think a combination of poor diet and no natural sunlight or proper UVB lighting or calcium d3 supplements, caused the problem.
If fed a lettuce only diet with no d3 supplements , it could easily cause MBD .
There are injections which can be given, a course of calcium and vit d3 injections.
If you can't get him to a vet, make sure you sprinkle Rep Cal on the food, and that he gets plenty of natural sunlight and a healthy diet high in calcium.
Best of luck with the little guy, at least now he has a second chance,
Terry.
